Sezon 1
W pilocie, Elena jest spokojną, przygnębioną i zamkniętą w sobie dziewczyną. Okazuje się, że powodem tego jest śmierć rodziców, kilka miesięcy przed wydarzeniami w serialu. Jej przyjaciele ujawniają, że przed đmiercą rodziców, była aktywna, popularna i wesoła, a jej zmiana w zachowaniu wynika z jej utraty. W miarę postępu serialu, zaczyna odzyskiwać swój dawny 'wigor', poznanie Stefana przyczynia się do tego. Elena została ukazana jako osoba bardzo dbająca o swoją rodzinę, wnikliwa o wysokim poziomie moralnym. Pokazuje głębokie przywiązanie do swoich przyjaciół, i często martwi się o innych ludzi, którzy nie oczekują tego od niej.

Stefan Salvatore
Elena met Stefan in the 'Pilot' episode, where at an instance they first clicked and their relationship slowly developed from a mutual crush to one of passionate romance. Unknown to Elena Stefan first met her the night her parents died and she had no idea as she awoke in the hospital as if some miracle occurred. Their relationship, of course, was not without its problems as Elena was upset with Stefan being so secretive. Initially Stefan was drawn to Elena because she looked like Katherine and after getting to know her he realized she wasn't and fell in love with her. In 'The Turning Point' they made love for the first time and in 'Bloodlines' he assured her she was the person he loved and not Katherine before revealing to her that she was adopted.
Damon Salvatore
Elena seems to have an uneasy but mutual friendship with Damon, as they've both saved the life of the other, and Damon seems to want to be close to her. Elena, since discovering what he is and what he's done, has been cold but civil towards Damon, except in extreme circumstances. She acknowledges that there's something between them, though what it is, neither of them are sure. Elena recognises that Damon is emotionally damaged and not as cold as he pretends to be, but she also doesn't try to make excuses for what he's done. She also seems to realise that Damon, while being the cause of most of Stefan's sorrows, is also very important to him, and vice versa.
Their friendship hits a rough patch in the episode 'A Few Good Men' when he reveals to Alaric (and everyone else) at the Bachelor Fundraiser in the Mystic Grill that he met Isobel in North Carolina shortly before she disappeared, which leads Elena to believe that he was the vampire that killed her. However, they put aside their differences in the episode 'Let the Right One In' to rescue Stefan after he is kidnapped by Frederick and the rest of the tomb vampires. In 'Miss Mystic Falls', Elena is surprised to see Damon waiting to dance with her after Stefan disappears but he steps in as he doesn't want her day to be ruined.
Caroline Forbes
Elena has been friends with Caroline since the first grade. Their relationship generally seems good, but can occasionally be strained, as Caroline appears to view Elena as her main rival for attention. She has also admitted that Bonnie is her very best friend, which would mean that Elena comes in second. Elena seems to be fond of Caroline, but has indicated that they don't always see eye-to-eye.
Matt Donovan
Matt and Elena used to be in a relationship, though the stress of her parents' deaths resulted in them splitting up as she needed some time to work things out. Matt confides in Bonnie that he would like to continue his relationship with Elena, but suspects that it may be too late. Elena describes their relationship as "that friend since childhood that you start dating because you owe it to yourselves to see if you can be more". She tells Stefan that their relationship wasn't passionate.[2]
While he may no longer be in a relationship with Elena and may even start to be realising that they may never get back together, Matt is sure to let Stefan know that he'd still do anything for Elena.[3] It seems that the pair have known each other all their lives, and were each other's 'firsts' for a lot of things.[4] Matt also reveals that they were best friends at one point.[5]
Bonnie Bennett
She is one of Elena's oldest friends and they are able to tell each other everything. Elena is the first person to whom Bonnie reveals she's a witch and she says she did so because they are so close to one another.
Jeremy Gilbert
He is Elena's younger brother and sees using drugs as a way of coping with the loss of their parents. He doesn't like her telling him off but is aware deep down that she's only looking out for him.
